Have a Happy and Safe Halloween!

October 26, 2012

Halloween is a night full of fun and treats for the entire family. But there are several factors that mean that Halloween in California can have some tricks up its sleeve. True Rate Insurance wants your Halloween to be a happy one, and a safe one! So whether you're taking your kids out trick-or-treating, carving a pumpkin with friends or just staying home to give candy to costumed trick-or-treaters, we can help make your evening safe while keeping the night fun and spooky. Just check out the tips below - and, as always, don't hesitate to call TrueRate Insurance if you need help on costume ideas ... er, coverage.

Trick-or-treating
  • Plan your route ahead of time. This will give you an idea how far you'll to walk, and where older children going alone will be.
  • Go trick-or-treating with neighbors and friends. It's safer than going alone.
  • Some malls and stores offer safe trick-or-treating alternatives.
  • Make sure trick-or-treaters eat before going out, so they won't be tempted to eat candy while trick-or-treating.
  • All candy should be inspected by an adult before it is eaten. Any candy that is tampered with should be reported to local law enforcement immediately.
Costumes
  • Masks could affect a child's vision as they walk through yards and on streets. Consider non-toxic, hypoallergenic makeup instead.
  • Make sure wigs and costumes are flame-retardant.
  • Encourage children to select brightly-colored costumes and to carry a flashlight.
  • Make sure the costume is appropriate for the weather.
Home preparations
  • Keep areas well lit and cords well-marked.
  • Make the path to your home safe for trick-or-treaters by clearing the following from walkways and lawns: Electrical cords, water hoses, low limbs, tree roots and flower pots.

Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible.
Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult.
Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you.

Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount of treats you eat.

Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. Always WALK and don't run from house to house.
Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent possible skin and eye irritation.
Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible.
Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses.
Only walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe.
Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls.
Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers.
Enter homes only if you're with a trusted adult.
Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes.
Have a fun and safe Halloween!
